Kitchen Cabinet Care Tips

If you’ve just had new kitchen cabinets installed, there’s no doubt you will want to keep them looking fresh for as long as possible. But how can you keep that showroom-perfect look when you’ll be using your kitchen daily for cooking, eating and entertaining?

In our latest blog, we run through some tips for cleaning kitchen cabinets, whether they’re painted, solid wood, laminate, gloss, or glass panelled.

Painted Kitchen Cabinet Care Tips

Like any other painted furniture, painted kitchen cupboards require some maintenance to stay looking at their best. Eventually due to wear and tear, the kitchen cabinets will need to be repainted, but until then here’s how you can keep yours looking clean.

For stubborn stains, you can use a homemade mixture of one part water with two parts baking soda. Dab the mixture onto the stain, leave it to work for a couple of minutes then wipe away. Any leftover residue can be buffed away with a clean, soft cloth.

Wood Kitchen Cabinet Care Tips

Most real wood cabinets will be sealed with a layer of varnish or lacquer to protect them from cracks and discolouration caused by moisture.

For sealed wood cabinets, use a warm soapy water to wash away any dirt, dust, or grease before drying thoroughly with a soft towel or cloth. Although the wood will have been treated to prevent water damage, we’d still recommend that you take care dry off as much water as you can.

For unsealed wood cabinets, you should use specialist wood cleaning products and take extra care not to cause any undue damage. However, small scratches and marks can be sanded away easily without ruining the finish.

Time is of the essence when it comes to food or grease spots on wooden cabinets; it’s best to clean those off as soon as you notice them, as they can become much harder to remove after they have dried.

Laminate Kitchen Cabinet Care Tips

Laminate kitchen cabinets are fairly hard wearing and do not require a lot of maintenance to stay in pristine condition. You can use all-purpose kitchen cleaners, but you should avoid abrasive sponges or scourers as they can easily scratch the cabinet’s surface.

Glass Panel Kitchen Cabinet Care Tips

If they aren’t cleaned properly, glass panelled kitchen cabinets easily show fingerprints, water marks, smudges and other unsightly blemishes which are even more noticeable in daylight.

You can use any glass cleaner to get rid of these, or dilute vinegar in warm water and polish with a soft, clean cloth. Don’t forget to clean the inside of the glass as well for a completely spotless finish.

You should take extra care when cleaning etched glass or you could risk damaging the delicate patterned surface.

Glass is relatively easy to clean but you should make sure any cleaners you use won’t damage the cabinet material surrounding the glass.

High Gloss Kitchen Cabinet Care Tips

High gloss kitchen cabinets look great in modern kitchens but they’re similar to glass panel cabinets in the way that fingerprints, grease marks, spills and other imperfections are incredibly noticeable. The good news is gloss kitchen cabinets are super easy to clean.

All you need is some gentle detergent, water to wipe them down with and a soft cloth or kitchen towel to dry them.
